Why are we called “Family Martial Arts?”
For us, we believe that the root of everything begins with the family. Family provides the building block for healthy, happy, involved citizens. Students who know that they can rely on a family during times of turmoil, and times of triumph are more likely to succeed throughout their personal and eventually professional lives.
Every student and family that walks through our doors is welcomed as one of our own. From the moment our Little Ninjas step onto the mat at the age of 2 they are treated like family. Our school is the only one of its kind where parents and children train together in the same classes. While that is not a requirement for our students, persons of all ages are welcome to train and learn together. We believe that this approach fosters a sense of leadership among our younger students and humility in our older ones. Despite the age ranges our classes are challenging and appropriate for students of all ages and abilities. Our family learns and grows together!
Martial Arts is well known for fostering, in both children and adults , a level of discipline not found in other activities. Through our drills, curriculum, and meditations we increase our ability to control our bodies and our minds.
Children are SUPPOSED to be unfocused! Their brains are not wired for listening, discipline, or focus, but here at Family Martial Arts we approach that as a perfect place to start! Through our age appropriate curriculum and learning approach we work with children where they are. We encourage high energy drills and excitement in all we do. We also believe that while children are not wired for discipline, it is our job to instill the groundwork so that they may grow into more disciplined teens and adults.
Adults and children alike struggle with focus. Every day, every moment our attention is pulled in a million different directions. Simple things- buying a cup of coffee, finishing spelling homework, become enormous tasks in which we need to balance multiple types of stimulus. Martial arts provides us with the tools we need to set aside distractions and to concentrate on a single goal, a single moment, a single task.
Focus is not just about sitting still and listening to the teacher. Focus is not just the ability to listen to your boss rattle on and on about something you know. Focus is larger than that. At Family Martial Arts we encourage focus in all moments, whether we are learning to execute a new technique or working on completing the meditation requirement for a black belt test. Our younger students benefit from drills designed to help them focus on their bodies in space as well as on their listening. Older students learn techniques that can help them focus not only on their bodies and physical abilities but also on their mental capacities. Students show improvements in their grades, physical performance and in their professional lives.
